Residential garage doors can have a huge impact on the overall style and aesthetic of your home. They can help increase your home’s curb appeal, or have the opposite effect if they are in need of repair or replacing. Garage doors that are not insulated or that are in poor condition can also result in heat loss and increased energy costs. If you are thinking about replacing your home’s garage door and are wondering, What’s the best material for a residential garage door?” We’re going to break down everything you need to know in this blog.

Wood

What's The Best Material For A Residential Garage Door?

A garage door that’s made of wood will be hands down one of the most beautiful choices in terms of aesthetics. Wood is a great choice for a garage door because it’s natural and very durable. Wood will never rust and will not dent easily. However, it is important to note that wood garage doors often require the biggest investment and will need refinishing every few years.

Steel

What's The Best Material For A Residential Garage Door?

Steel is one of the most popular materials for residential garage doors. Steel is the most economical choice and requires less maintenance than wood. Steel is a great choice for a residential garage door because it offers great security, insulation, and is available in many different styles.

If you want the look of wood without the price tag and maintenance, then steel is definitely the way to go. However, it should be noted that steel is more susceptible to dents.

Aluminum & Glass

What's The Best Material For A Residential Garage Door?

For a modern update that will surely be the envy of your neighbours, an aluminum and glass garage door is a very popular material choice for residential garage doors. Aluminum is naturally resistant to rust and corrosion, which makes it a great long-term investment. However, aluminum is naturally softer than steel and can dent more easily.

Specialty Glass

All types of garage doors can be completely customized with specialty glass. At Haws Overhead Doors, we offer many choices of specialty glass for you to choose from to achieve the look and level of privacy that you desire for your home.

Insulation

All of our garage doors can be insulated, regardless of the material. In our Canadian climate, insulated garage doors will help to lower your energy costs and keep you more comfortable.

At Wm. Haws Overhead Doors, you could say that we are passionate about garage doors. When we’re speaking with our customers, we get asked some common questions. This blog is a great opportunity for our team to address our top frequently asked questions about garage doors! Read on for all our answers.

How long should a garage door last?

A good quality garage door that’s been professionally installed should last at least 20 years, if not longer.

How much will it cost to have a new garage door installed?

This one is difficult for us to answer because there are so many variables! It really depends on which options you choose, and the size of your door or doors. Our team will ask you a series of questions to identify the best option for you and then provide you with an accurate quote once we have all the necessary information.

Should I add windows?

In our opinion — yes! Windows are great because they will let light into an otherwise dark garage, and they also add curb appeal to your home’s exterior.

Should I get an insulated garage door?

Insulated doors actually do much more than keep heat inside your garage. They are much better quality all around. We always recommend installing an insulated garage door because they’re multi-layered and much more sturdy.

Can’t I just buy my garage door opener from a big box store?

Please don’t. We aren’t saying this for no reason. When you buy your opener from a chain store, you’re not getting a professional grade product. Sure, it could still be from the same company that we sell, but the quality will be lower. In addition, when you buy in-store, there’s a good chance that you will also need to buy a conversion kit to install it properly. As well, in most cases, we can provide you with a better and longer warranty.

If you have a question about garage doors that weren’t covered on our list of top frequently asked questions about garage doors, please let us know! We’d love to hear from you. If you’re looking to get a quote, you can also reach us here and a member of our team will be happy to help.

At Wm. Haws Overhead Doors, we understand that overhead doors for commercial and agricultural applications differ from residential applications. Our team specializes in the sale, installation and repair of commercial and agricultural overhead doors to fit your needs.

Why Are Commercial & Agricultural Overhead Doors Important?

Your commercial or agricultural buildings house a lot of important goods that are essential for running your business or farm.Whether it’s livestock, harvest, equipment, technology and more, protecting your livelihood is essential, and it starts with choosing the right overhead door.

What Should I Consider When Choosing An Overhead Door?

If you are considering an overhead door for commercial or agricultural applications, you should choose an overhead door based on a few main criteria:

1. What type of building is the door for?

The first thing you should do before choosing an overhead door is assess the building where you’ll be installing it. A fully-insulated barn that houses livestock will need a different type of overhead door than a storage building or a commercial building.

2. Does it need to be waterproof?

Depending on the use of your building, you’ll want to consider how waterproof your overhead door needs to be. If your building houses dry goods or electronics that need to be kept dry, you’ll want to install an overhead door that is highly waterproof.

3. How durable does the door need to be?

Your commercial or agricultural overhead door is an investment. Purchasing and installing a highly-durable overhead door is essential for ensuring that you won’t have to replace it on a regular basis. In heavy commercial or agricultural settings, choose a reinforced door with a sturdy body to withstand everyday use.

4. How efficient is the overhead door?

If your commercial or agricultural building has heating or cooling systems, choosing an energy efficient overhead door should be a priority. Look for an overhead door with a high R-value and a low U-value. Overhead doors with high energy efficiency can also be useful in settings where you don’t have heating or cooling as they can help keep the elements out and maintain a comfortable temperature within the building.

5. How secure is the overhead door?

Protecting your commercial or agricultural business is of the utmost importance, and your overhead door is the first line of security for your building and property. Look for an overhead door with reinforced hinges, manual locks, steel latches and other security features to suit your needs.

Commercial & Agricultural Overhead Doors Can Be Beautiful

While choosing an overhead door that’s durable and secure is a priority for any business owner, the aesthetic qualities of the overhead door can be just as important. You don’t need to sacrifice beauty for function, even in commercial and agricultural settings. You can easily match your door with the appearance of your building by considering features like:

  • Colour
  • Style
  • Size
  • Windows
  • Other customizable options & features

At Wm. Haws Overhead Doors, we carry a wide range of customizable commercial and agricultural overhead doors from Clopay.

Preventative Maintenance For Your Commercial Or Agricultural Overhead Door

Choosing the right commercial or agricultural overhead door is just the first step to ensuring your business and livelihood are protected.  If a commercial or agricultural door is faulty, it can negatively impact your business, so annual preventative maintenance is essential. We recommend that you consider having an annual inspection as part of your preventative maintenance plan to ensure your overhead door continues to work effectively.

As homeowners in Southern Ontario, we’re lucky to have four distinct seasons. We see the beauty of spring, summer, fall and winter, but we also experience the extremes. Hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters are the norm around here.

That’s why having the right equipment and proper defence against the elements is important for our homes. For your garage, we recommend insulated garage doors.

What is an Insulated Garage Door?

If you think a standard garage door is going to keep your garage insulated during the summer and winter, think again. While most garage door installation involves weather stripping and other protections against the elements, insulated garage doors have added insulation to regulate the temperature inside your garage. This insulation is most often made of polystyrene or polyurethane. While it won’t be quite the same temperature as the rest of your home, it makes using your garage much more pleasant during the summer and winter months.

Insulated garage doors have several benefits that make them a great choice.

Reasonable Temperatures

During the summer, our garages can really heat up, and in the winter, they can be freezing cold. In fact, garages with non-insulated doors can be up to 10 degrees warmer or cooler than it is outside. This makes it difficult to use your garage for hobbies like woodworking, gardening or tinkering with your car. If you keep your car in your garage over the winter, this difference in temperatures could affect whether or not you can start your car in the morning.

Lower Energy Costs

In addition to making your garage more comfortable throughout the year, insulated garage doors can also help to lower your energy costs. This is especially true if your garage is located underneath a living space, like a bedroom or an office. The hot or cold air from your garage rises through to the living spaces above, causing your home comfort systems to have to work harder to keep the spaces comfortable. When the temperature in your garage is regulated, it affects the rest of your home much less.

Quiet Operation

If your garage is attached to your home, you know they can be quite noisy when opened or closed. This is especially true if your garage door is on a mechanized opener system. However, insulation on your garage door not only affects the temperature in your garage, it can also insulate the sound. Insulated garage doors tend not to rattle as much as non-insulated varieties, so you won’t have to worry about waking up the whole house when you leave for work early in the morning.

Strength and Durability

Because insulated garage doors have three layers as opposed to one, whether it’s polyurethane or polypropylene, this makes them stronger and gives them more integrity than non-insulated doors. If you have kids, this is great because it will be better protected from denting which can be caused by something as harmless as a basketball. Your garage door can take a lot of abuse, having insulation could help to protect it.

Stylish Options

We have over 30 years of experience installing garage doors, and over that time we’ve learned that no two houses – or two homeowners – are the same. We know how important it is to have options to fit the style of your home, and that’s one of the reasons to choose insulated garage doors. We get our insulated doors from Clopay, and they’re available in steel, wood and aluminum. In addition to having several styles available to you, we also carry 10 standard and four upgraded colour options to choose from.

At Haws Overhead Doors in Guelph, we carry a wide range of garage doors to fit the needs of your home and your family. Learn more about residential overhead doors from Haws!
